Personal Background

Shelly was the last of six Birks children and lived in Milford, CT throughout her childhood years. She attended Foran High School and then got her Biology degree from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1981. After several years working at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven (where she met her husband Peter of 38 years) she joined Pfizer where she was a research scientist for almost ten years. At that time, she left the work force to be a full-time mom to her two children, Tucker and Greg.

Peter and Shelly own Winterberry Farm in Killingworth. This choose and cut Christmas tree farm opened for business in 1989 and has over 17 acres of trees. It has become an integral part of families Christmas tradition throughout the shoreline.

Shelly began volunteering for the Killingworth Library during the building campaign for the current building. As the chairperson of the fundraising committee, she organized a town wide door to door campaign to raise the money to make the dream of a modern library a reality. Serving the town and the community has always been a passion for Shelly but her real estate career has put her volunteer work on hold for now.
